
Let’s Talk Carbon Fiber Infrared Lamps
If you’ve ever worked with traditional metal coils, you know they’re okay, but they have their limits. Carbon fiber lamps are a different beast. We use a carbon filament tucked inside a quartz tube, which lets the heat soak much deeper into whatever you’re working on. It’s fast. Really fast. If you need a massive amount of heat and you need it now, this is your best bet. Getting the Power Right Here’s the thing about voltage and wattage: they’re the knobs that control your heat flux. If you cram a high-wattage tube into a short space, you get an intense blast of heat. But you have to be careful with your power supply. If you push too much current through a low-voltage tube, you’ll fry the filament in a few hours. Just like that, it’s gone. On the flip side, if you under-power it, you’ll end up with weird, uneven cold spots. Neither is a great look. The Build and the Fit We use high-purity quartz glass because it can take a beating. When things get scorching hot, the glass doesn’t freak out or crack from the thermal shock. Plus, it keeps the carbon filament from oxidizing and burning away. When it comes to plugging them in, we usually stick with R7s or Sk15 connectors. Why? Because they just work. They slide right into most industrial heater banks without a fight. They fit tight, too, which means you won’t have to worry about electrical arcing at the terminals. Some of these have special coatings to tweak the wavelength. Just a heads-up: that can dial back the total heat a little bit. Putting Them to Work You’ll see these all over PET blowing and paint curing lines. The beauty of shortwave radiation is that it hits the target instantly. It doesn’t waste time heating up all the air in the room; it just goes straight to the material. Your cycle times drop, and your productivity goes up. But there’s a catch. Because the heat is so intense, you’ve got to keep your reflectors spotless. A little bit of dust or a smudge of oil can create a hot spot, and that’s how you end up with a cracked quartz tube. And one last thing—check your cooling fans. Make sure they can actually handle the heat around the housing, or you’ll be looking at melted wiring. Nobody wants that.
