
Getting the Most Out of Carbon Fiber Infrared Lamps
If you’re running an industrial oven and need heat now, carbon fiber infrared lamps are your best bet. They aren’t like those old-school metal coil elements. Instead, they use a carbon fiber filament tucked inside a quartz tube. The magic here is in the shortwave infrared. Instead of wasting time heating up the air inside the oven, the heat just dives straight into your materials. It’s fast. Really fast. The Power Side of Things When we’re picking out lamps, it all comes down to your oven’s power rail—basically, the wattage and voltage you’ve got to work with. If we go with a higher voltage, we can cram more power into a shorter tube without frying the leads. But here’s the thing: when you’ve got a high-wattage array, that heat is incredibly concentrated. You’ve got to make sure your chassis and vents can handle that “soak.” If they can’t, your wiring is going to give up on you way sooner than it should. The Nitty-Gritty on Materials That quartz tube isn’t just for show; it keeps the carbon fiber from oxidizing and burning out. Depending on what you’re baking or curing, we can add specific coatings to the glass. This helps tweak the wavelength or stops chemical vapors from eating away at the surface. And please, don’t cut corners on the connectors. Whether you’re using R7s or Sk15, the fit has to be tight. If you try to force a “close enough” replacement in there, you’ll get arcing. Then you’re looking at a burnt-out contact point and a lot of downtime. A Few Things to Watch Out For The best part? These things heat up almost instantly. No more sitting around waiting for a long warm-up cycle. But there’s a catch. Shortwave radiation is aggressive. If you’re working with something sensitive that scorches easily, you have to be careful with your spacing. If the lamp is too close, you’ll char the surface before the core even gets warm. To keep things from getting out of hand, I always suggest a PID controller. It lets you modulate the power so you don’t overshoot your target temperature and ruin your batch.
