The heart of these heaters is carbon. It keeps a stable electrical resistance even when things get seriously hot, and it holds up over thousands of heating cycles. That carbon sits inside a quartz envelope. Quartz can handle sudden temperature swings, lets infrared through with no fuss, and keeps the element sealed off from the outside air. Many versions include a halogen gas fill. It helps reduce evaporation and keeps the quartz clear, which means consistent output over time. The output sits in the shortwave infrared range, around 1–3 microns—just right for surface heating. And the connections? They’re built for real-world use. R7s bases are common for linear lamp styles, offering a solid mechanical fit and reliable contact. For panel assemblies, you’ll often find screw terminals or quick-connects that make wiring simple and replacements quick.
Why This Works in a Sauna
In a sauna, these panels give you that direct radiant heat you feel on your skin, not just hot air. That means less temperature stratification and a faster response when the heater kicks on. Carbon elements are tougher than many traditional wire designs when it comes to repeated on/off cycles, but they still need proper thermal management.
