
Quartz vs. Carbon Fiber: Which Heater Actually Fits Your Setup?
When you’re dealing with high-density heat in a machine, you usually end up with two choices: quartz tubes or carbon fiber. Picking the wrong one isn’t just a minor mistake—it’s the difference between a smooth run and a melted mess. Here is the real deal on how they work. Quartz tubesare the heavy hitters. Imagine a tungsten filament tucked inside high-purity silica. It gets incredibly hot—almost instantly. If you need that “hit it with everything” kind of heat for short-wave IR, this is your best bet. Carbon fiberis a different animal. We wrap carbon filaments in a protective sleeve to give you medium-to-long wave radiation. It doesn’t hit those crazy peak temperatures that quartz does, but it spreads the heat out much more evenly. It’s why you see them in saunas or big drying stations where “hot spots” would just ruin the product. But here is where people usually mess up:the connectors. We stick to standard R7s or Sk15 bases so you can just pop them into most oven machinery without a headache. But you’ve got to be careful with the voltage and the length of the tube. If you try to push too many watts through a short tube, it’s going to burn out. Fast. And for the love of everything, check your wiring. I’ve seen way too many lead wires literally melt because someone ignored the amp draw on a 2000W+ lamp. It’s a nightmare to clean up. So, which one do you actually need? If you’re running PET blowing machines or curing plastics that need to set quickly, go with quartz. Just a heads-up: quartz is brittle. If your machine shakes or takes a beating, make sure those mounting brackets are tight. Otherwise, you’re going to be sweeping up broken glass. For organic materials—stuff that might scorch or burn if the heat is too intense—carbon fiber is the way to go. It’s gentler. It really just comes down to how much heat you need and how fast you need it.
