Getting Tobacco Drying Right with Carbon Fiber IR
Drying tobacco is a bit of a tightrope walk. You need to get the moisture out, but if you push too hard, you ruin the leaf. That’s why we lean on carbon fiber infrared lamps. They heat up fast and have a way of sinking into the plant matter without just scorching the outside. The secret is in the filament. Most lamps use nichrome wire, but these use carbon fiber tucked inside a quartz tube. Because they can handle much higher surface temperatures, they pump out a lot more heat in a smaller space. For you, that means you can actually shrink your drying racks and still get the same amount of heat. It’s a huge win for your floor space. A few tips on the hardware side… When you’re wiring these in, keep an eye on your voltage and wattage. You want enough punch to get the core of the leaf warm quickly—if it stays damp too long, mold moves in, and that’s a nightmare. We stick with quartz glass to keep the humidity of the curing barn from killing the filament. Usually, R7s or SK15 connectors do the trick for a snug fit. Just a heads-up: if you’re swapping out old lamps for these, double-check that your leads can handle the amperage. You don’t want to find out the hard way by melting your terminals. The trade-offs Here is the thing: these lamps hit peak heat almost instantly. It’s great for quick cycling, but it puts a massive initial strain on your power supply. Make sure your breakers are ready for that initial surge. Also, while the quartz is sturdy, it’s still glass. Don’t let anything slam into it, and definitely keep the water spray away. Why bother with IR? Think about forced hot air. You’re spending a fortune heating up the entire room just to dry a few leaves. It’s wasteful. With IR, you’re heating the tobacco directly. The air stays out of it. Your electric bill drops, and you get way more control over how the cure actually happens. It just makes sense.
