
Let’s Talk About Carbon Fiber Infrared Heating
Most people are used to the old-school quartz or halogen lamps, but carbon fiber is a different beast. Instead of a metal coil, we use a carbon fiber filament. Why does that matter? Well, for starters, it hits your target temperature incredibly fast. It also handles the “stretch and shrink” of heating and cooling way better than metal does. You get a ton of long-wave infrared radiation without having to crank the heat to extreme levels.
Getting the Power Right
Here is the thing: your wattage and voltage basically decide how “dense” that heat is. If you go for high wattage, you’ll hit your temps in a blink. But be careful. That puts a lot of pressure on your power supply. If you’re building a big array of these, make sure your wiring can actually handle the current. I’ve seen too many engineers forget about voltage drop over long cables. It’s a nightmare. You end up with some parts of your production line running hot and others barely warm.
How They’re Actually Built
We tuck the carbon filament inside a quartz tube. It keeps the fiber safe from the air and prevents it from getting smashed. Depending on what you’re heating, we can add special coatings to the glass to change how the heat is absorbed. Then there are the connectors. Whether you’re using a pinch-weld or a threaded cap, just make sure it’s tight. A loose connection leads to arcing, and nobody wants sparks flying around their equipment.
Where They Work (And Where They Don’t)
You’ll mostly see these in PET blowing, drying tunnels, or curing ovens. If you’re still using old resistive heaters and you’re tired of waiting forever for them to warm up, these are a great swap. But there is a catch. Carbon fiber is fragile. If your machine shakes or vibrates like crazy, those fibers can actually snap. It’s a frustrating way to kill a heater. To stop that from happening, just use some vibration-dampening brackets. Mount them securely, and they’ll last a long time.
